We are thrilled to announce that H2O Datatech is joining forces with Monash University Malaysia and the Selangor Climate Adaptation Centre (SCAC) to pioneer the development of the Selangor River WEFE Information Support System — an ambitious, CARA-funded research project set to reshape how climate adaptation decisions are made across one of Malaysia's most vital river basins.

A landmark climate adaptation partnership

Funded under CARA — the UK Government's Climate Adaptation and Resilience programme — this project brings together world-class academic research, regional climate policy and frontier data science to tackle one of the defining challenges of our time: making rivers, cities and ecosystems resilient to a changing climate.

Together with Monash University Malaysia's engineering researchers and SCAC's adaptation expertise, we are co-developing an intelligent platform that turns complex environmental data into clear, actionable insight for decision-makers across the Selangor River basin.

What is the WEFE nexus?

WEFE stands for Water, Energy, Food and Environment — four systems that are deeply interconnected. A decision in one almost always ripples into the others: water abstraction affects energy generation, agriculture competes with urban demand, and a healthy environment underpins them all.

The Selangor River WEFE Information Support System will model these interdependencies in one place, giving planners and regulators a holistic, basin-wide view rather than a fragmented, sector-by-sector picture.

Why it matters for Selangor

  • The Selangor River basin supplies 60% of potable water to Klang Valley and supports livelihoods for millions of people.
  • Climate change is intensifying floods, droughts and competing demands on shared resources.
  • A WEFE-based information system helps balance trade-offs between water, energy, food and nature.
  • Evidence-based adaptation planning protects communities, infrastructure and ecosystems together.

Building the future of evidence-based adaptation

For H2O Datatech, this collaboration is a powerful affirmation of our mission: that better environmental decisions start with better data. Contributing our data science and digital platform expertise alongside Monash and SCAC is both a privilege and a responsibility.

We will share more as the project progresses — but for now, we are energised to be part of a partnership that places science, data and resilience at the heart of Selangor's climate future.

Key takeaways

  • H2O Datatech is partnering with Monash University Malaysia and SCAC on a CARA-funded project.
  • The project develops the Selangor River WEFE (Water–Energy–Food–Environment) Information Support System.
  • WEFE thinking captures the interdependencies between water, energy, food and the environment.
  • The system supports holistic, evidence-based climate adaptation planning for the Selangor River basin.
